A vacuum cleaner generates 65 dB (A) to 90 dB (A) of sound under normal working conditions. Sound levels higher or lower than this range usually indicate some problem with the machine. This article explains all the possible reasons why your Bissell Upright Vacuum Cleaner is extremely loud.
Reasons Why My Bissell Upright Vacuum Cleaner is Extremely Loud?
Reason # 1: Dirty Filter
Vacuum filters get dirty as you clean. The motor works harder to generate more suction when the filter is dirty. It leads to vacuum cleaners running loud.
Solution: Remove filters from the vacuum and clean them. Remove every bit of dirt by gently tapping the filter on any hard surface outdoors. Then use a brush to get rid of the remaining dirt. Also, some filters are washable, so wash them using warm water and a mild detergent. But, always allow the filter to dry completely before reinstalling it on the vacuum. Make sure you wear a face mask while cleaning your filter.
Reason # 2: Damaged or Kinked Hose
The hose may have holes or cracks. It can also be kinked or bent; requiring the motor to run harder and generate more noise.
Solution: Inspect the hose for any damages or kinks; straighten the kinks with your hand. Use duct tape to seal small holes on the hose. You may need to replace the hose if there are multiple holes.
Reason # 3: Incorrect Height Adjustment
Bissell upright vacuum cleaners have different height settings for different floors. A wrong height setting will force the motor to generate more suction and run louder.
Solution: Always adjust the height of your vacuum according to the surface. Check the height adjustment knob and set it according to the height of your carpet. Hardwood floors require a different setting than plush or high-pile carpets.
Low-pile or delicate carpets and bare floors need the lowest setting. On the other hand, the highest setting is for the high-pile carpets. And the medium setting works well on carpets with a medium thickness.
Reason # 4: Clogged Brush Role
The brush roll collects dust and debris from the floor. It can get blocked if not cleaned periodically, requiring a vacuum to exert more pressure and generate more noise.
Solution: Check the brush roll of your vacuum cleaner and remove the accumulated debris and pet hairs. Then turn on your vacuum to see the difference in the noise level.
Reason # 5: Damaged Belt
A damaged belt or brush roll also causes the Bissell upright vacuum cleaner to be noisy.
Solution: If the brush roll or belt is damaged, then replacement is the only solution.
Reason # 6: Clogged Hose
The vacuum runs louder when the hose is clogged.
Solution: Check the hose and remove any dirt or debris by using a broomstick.
Reason # 7: Fan Problems
The fan keeps the motor cool and running for a long time. Dust and debris can block fan vents, accumulate on blades and spindle. It will heat the motor quickly, forcing it to run louder than usual.
Solution: Open the vacuum’s engine casing and inspect the fan for blockages or damages, such as bent or broken blades. Clean the exhaust vents if the fan is all right. Replace the fan if it is broken.
Reason # 8: Dry Bearings
The motor bearings in the vacuum cleaner can dry after years of use. A grinding noise from the vacuum indicates that the bearings need to be greased.
Solution: Check the owner’s handbook on how you can grease the moving parts in your vacuum cleaner’s motor.
Reason # 9: Loose/worn or Damaged Parts
Check your vacuum cleaner for any loose, worn, or damaged parts. These parts vibrate and make sounds as the motor revs up.
Solution: Inspect your vacuum cleaner by taking it apart. You may want to hire a professional or do research for it.
