Roomba error 2 means that the brushes and extractors are not turning properly. It is a common error due to dust and debris accumulation.
Not fixing error 2 can harden the gears, overwork the motor, and reduce suction power and runtime. This guide explains how to fix error 2 on your Roomba Vacuum cleaner.
5 Steps to Fix Roomba Error 2
1. Clean Out Roomba Brushes
Things Needed
You will need the following things to clean your vacuum.
- A standard screwdriver (if you don’t have a screwdriver, you can use a small coin)
- Microfiber cloth (you can also use alcohol wipes if you don’t have a microfiber cloth)
- Roomba brush cleaning tool
- A towel
- A can of compressed air
Cleaning Steps for Brushes
- Turn off the device before cleaning the brushes.
- Turn your robotic vacuum upside down on a towel or any big cloth. It will help wipe off the dust that will fall during cleaning.
- Unscrew the side brushes with the help of a screwdriver or a coin.
- After removing the brushes, use a microfiber cloth or alcohol wipes to clean them. You can use tap brushes on the surface to remove the dirt inside the brush hair. Roomba brushes are not designed to rinse off with water, so never use water to clean these brushes.
- Access the yellow caps present on both sides of the brushes. Remove these caps.
- You will see fibers and hair caught in these caps. Remove these clumps with your hand. Reinstall these caps after removing the chunks.
- Use microfiber cloth to clean the brush compartment as it will be dirty also.
- Place the brushes back and tighten the screws.
Cleaning Steps for Rollers
- Flip your Roomba vacuum, and you will see two yellow tabs. Push these tabs to open the brush guard.
- Remove other brushes from the cleaning head, e.g., bristle brush and flexible beater brush.
- Take out the bearings of the yellow brush. Use a microfiber cloth or alcohol wipes to clean these bearings. You may find hair, fiber, and dirt there too.
- Use Roomba cleaning tool to clean the bristle brush.
- Close brush guards and secure them properly; you will hear a snapping sound, confirming they are attached correctly.
2. Lubricate Brush’s Gear
Lubrication ensures smooth and friction-free movement for gears.
- Turn back your Roomba, unscrew the bottom panel, and remove side brushes.
- Loosen the bolts on the blue motor located alongside the side brush motor. Remove the screws to take out the blue motor. The blue motor holds the gears.
- Pull out the silt head screw slowly as there is a plastic part attached to it. This part helps keep the motor in its chamber.
- You will see a snap latch after opening the motor. You should be careful while dealing with motor housing as you shouldn’t damage that snap latch. There are gears and motors in one part in the housing and metal axle and a big gear on the other part.
- After accessing the gears, lubricate them. Never take gears out of the housing. After lubrication, you can check the gears by turning them in the housing.
- Reassemble the gears after oiling.
3. Restart or Reset Your Roomba
Error 2 often appears due to system bugs and software issues. It is recommended to reset your Roomba before going for replacements. A simple reset often fixes these issues. Please note that resetting wipes all the data and restores the unit to factory settings.
Manual Reset
Restart Roomba I and S Series: Press the clean button for 20 seconds or until a white light starts spinning clockwise around the button. Wait for the white light to turn off to complete the reset.
Restart Roomba 700, 800, and 900 Series: Press and hold the clean button for 20 seconds; you will hear a beep confirming the reset.
Reset through Home App
- Open your iRobot Home App.
- Go to settings.
- Select the factory reset option.
- Verify the prompt that will appear on your screen.
- Wait for a few minutes to let the app finish the resetting.
4. Charge Your Roomba Battery
Error 2 may also appear in some models due to a dead battery. Check your manual to see if this is the case.
Make sure the battery is fully charged before putting the vacuum to work. Check the outlet, charging station, charger, cables, and battery contacts to ensure proper charging. A red light indicates that the unit is charging, and green light shows the battery is fully charged.
Roomba’s battery lasts for 2-3 years with 400 charge cycles. Replace the battery if it has lived its life.
5. Replace Roomba Brushes
Replace the brushes if cleaning and lubrication don’t work.
- Unscrew the side brush, bottom panel, and side brush module.
- Insert the new side brush module and tighten the screws.
- Put back the bottom panel and tighten its screws also.
- Screw back the side brushes.
